Electrical Projects - Renovations

A.C. Lewis YMCA
Athletic Facility: $250,000 - $500,000

The project involved a shutdown of the facility’s service over the Christmas holidays to replace the existing main switchgear with a new 2000A switchgear. Complete lighting and power renovations were done to the majority of the existing 33,000 square foot facility and a 5,000 square foot addition was constructed for aerobics classes. This area also includes an interactive area, XArkade, to facilitate the exercise of children. The facility’s boiler room also received extensive work to replace aged conduit and wire.

Kress at Third and Main
Mixed Use: Commercial and High-End Residential: $1,500,000 - $2,000,000

The Kress, Knox, and Welsh-Levy Buildings, constructed between 1887 and 1889, are several of Baton Rouge’s most historic downtown buildings and represent some of the best examples of Art Deco and Victorian architecture in the city. The buildings are also the site of an important piece of the state’s Civil Rights history. In 1960, seven Southern University students launched Louisiana’s “sit-in” movement when they walked into the Kress store and asked to be served at the “whites-only” counter. They were denied service and were arrested for disturbing the peace. For these reasons, the Kress, Knox, and Welsh-Levy Buildings are recognized on the National Register of Historic places.

The buildings – uninhabited for at least the last 15 years – were completely renovated and now boast 18,000 square feet of retail space; 12,000 square feet of commercial space; and 35,000 square feet of residential space (19 units). The job, complicated by existing conditions inside the 125 year-old buildings, lasted approximately 12 months and now serves as a landmark of Baton Rouge’s downtown renaissance.

A new 750 KW diesel generator was furnished and installed to provide emergency power to the building. UPS systems were furnished and installed on each floor to provide critical power to workstations and equipment. Fire alarm, sound, security/access control, low voltage lighting control, communication and data wiring were installed. This project was fast tracked for completion in a six-month period of time to coordinate with the owner’s critical schedule for relocation.

The FMOLHS completely renovated the old LeBlanc & Waddell Law Firm building to accommodate the IT department for Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. The 40,000 square foot building was completely renovated in two phases. Both phases were fast tracked and the entire project only lasted 5 months. LSU Student Union and Union Theater
Campus renovation / Theatre renovation:
$9,500,000 - $10,000,000

A complete renovation was accomplished to the LSU Student Union and Union Theatre while the Union facility remained open. Underground bored 13.8 KV duct banks were utilized to bring 13.8 KV power from three blocks away to the Union. The Union had been fed by an antiquated 4.16 KV power system. An outdoor distribution yard was used to house the 13.8 switch, four power transformers and outdoor service switches. The infrastructure was installed during a 10-week period of time to allow for two weeks of shutdown during the Christmas holiday. During the two-week shutdown, all existing service equipment was removed and the new service was brought into the facility. Exterior service entrance busways were engineered to coordinate with the new equipment and were utilized to bring three services into the sub-grade mechanical/electrical equipment room. Excellent planning allowed this phase of the project to be completed ahead of schedule. The electrical systems incorporated into the Student Union include power, lighting, networked lighting control, generator life safety backup, fire alarm, sound, security, access control, communication and data wiring. In addition to these systems, the Union Theatre includes stage lighting and dimming, power to company switches, and a theatrical sound system.
